Masjid Al-Akbar Surabaya

Abdurrahman Wahid.

Al Akbar Surabaya as National Mosque (MAS) is the largest mosque in Surabaya and the second largest mosque in Indonesia, after the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. This mosque, which has a unique style of modern architecture and is projected to visualize the concept of a mosque in a broad sense, is the Islamic Center of the multidimensional roles. It bears the religious, cultural and educative missions, including religious tourism mission.

MAS was first initiated by Mayor of Surabaya at that time, H. Soenarto Soemoprawiro (the late), symbolized with a groundbreaking ceremony by the Vice President, H. Try Sutrisno, August 1995. Its construction began in September 1996.

On 10 November 2000 the MAS was inaugurated by the President of Indonesia at that time, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid. This MAS is located in an area of 11.2 hectares, has a building area of 28 509 square meters with a capacity of 59 .000 congregation. The address is in the area of the Masjid Al Akbar Pagesangan No. 1, East Surabaya, precisely at the edge of Surabaya – Malang highway.

The presence of domes and tower is the uniqueness of this mosque. Domes that are designed to resemble a lamellar structure with a combination of blue and green, are giving the impression of cold and fresh. The building of mosque tower is using technology from Singapore Slip Form.

The tower is 99 meters high and is equipped with view tower at a height of 68 meters which can accommodate about 30 people. To reach that height we can use lift and at there we can enjoy the beautiful and sparkling view of Surabaya at night.
